Hi Sergio...you probably need to change your NIE number to an NIF number but to do so you need to apply for Spanish residency...you can not get reduced ferry rates on an NIE number...it's only Spainish residents avail of cheap rates on the ferries and they all have NIF numbers...NIE numbers are o...

...nly issued to non Spanish to allow them open bank accounts to buy property etc...also since Brexit UK citizens/UK passport holders can only stay in Spain for 90 days out of every 180 and leave for 90...also can no longer drive in Spain on UK drivers licence...you have to sit the Spanish driving test and you need to be a resident to apply...I know friends in Malaga on a 2 year waiting list for driving test...this is my understanding...

Unless you are a Spanish citizen you will not get a NIF, you can only have a Numero de Identidad de Extranjero ( NIE ), Foreigner Identification Number. This number never changes. You don’t mention if you are a resident or not, but if you aren’t then the rules have changed since Brexit. If you are already a resident then you can update your existing paper green card for a plastic TIE card. With regards to getting 75% discounted travel, you are only entitled to this if you are resident in the Canary or Balearic Islands (after 5 years of residency!) and you must be registered on the empadronamiento ( padron ) If you are registered then you will need a padron certificate from your local town hall to obtain a new or replacement NIE or TIE card.

Thanks for your reply and advice. I’m not a resident but have an NIE and prior to Brexit I travelled on the ferries regularly at reduced rates with a certificate from my Council as you have said.

Regards, Sergio
