Gust wondering if anyone has any information on using a Drone. Thinking of purchasing a sports drone. As it is for sports it will never be more than about 3 meters off the ground. Do I need licenses or need to register.

Thanks in advance

Hi Bmpoleary,

You wrote sportsdrone, you need to specify the type. Weight, has it a camera camera, where you want to fly, at what hours you want to fly, are you want to us youe AR gogles, 3 meters above the ground is really low, do you mean 30 meters? Remember that in sportsmode, and at just 3 meter, a drone is dangerous even if its a small one.Ect ect.  More so, if you are using AR gogles, you NEED to have somebody whatching the drone and airspace as well as persons approching.

As a proffesional drone artist and drone flyer, although i have all the licences and insurance, there are restrictions. In general, for drones heavier than 250 gr. You NEED to have a license. Allmost all these  drones come with a camera, this means that you to HAVE to comply with privacy rules and a licence. Further, you need to have knowledge a basic knowledge of weather conditiones, as a professional, it is a must. And also know where and with what you may fly, (restricted airspace). You need to know the limits of your drone, emergency situations, ect ect.

If you are competing with your sportsdrone with buddy's, on a safe place, you need to check a lot of things.

I have a few regular drones and special heavier drones for actionsports alo on water. Underwater robotic drones ect.

It is real fun if you do it right and safe. Police can and will check on you which is good for everybody's safety.  They can check, licence, i.d,  drone, flightplan, ect.

As a rule, where there people near or urban areas, airports, tactical buildings, prisons, powerplants do not do it,  if you are not proffesional and with permision from authorities. Example, if you look at some app,s you can clearly see where there is restricted airspace.  These app's let you fill in the data and then give results based on your input. Also you can get info from NOTAM. With latest restrictions applicable for the area where you want to fly. Lately there were coastal exercises with search and rescue for the coast here in the south. You cannot fly then.

A childrens toy drone without camera can be used in your garden can be used but they weigh near to nothing and are restricted in many ways. Childrens toy. But parent supervision is also aplied with those things.

Hope this reply can help you.

Regards,

Richard

Hi Richard. Thanks for coming back to me.

The drone I am looking at is advertised as 249 grams. I am a keen cyclist so it would be largely used in a follow me mode and the closer to me the better. I am not an experienced drone user so I am still at an investigation stage.

The Drone I am looking at is a DJI Mini 3 pro but still doing my research. Definitely would not be using it in any built up areas. I typically cycle between Puerto Mogan and Veneguera (Roads are quite remote and quiet. Not a lot of traffic) and also Puerto Rico down towards San Fernando.

Thanks for your input

Best regards

Hi there.

Glad i could be help.

Remember if you take your drone on a aircraft, to check if there are restrictions regarding the batteries. And call in advance that you want to take a drone with you.

Richard
