Winter property rental

Hi Everyone

I am new to this forum , so hello everyone. I would like some advice please.

My wife and I have now both retired due to illness, we are looking to spend our winters in a sunny warm climate and I can think of nowhere better than one of the Canary Islands because they have soo much to offer.

Eventually we aim to permanently move to one of the islands after having experienced them first. This year we would like to rent an apartment on the warmer side of Gran Canary or Tenerife from November to March/April, somewhere between 4 to 5 months, can anyone reccommend a reasonable 1 bedroom apartment close to amenities that is reasonably priced, or perhaps a website or such like where we can view properties and the surrounding area

any advice would be most welcome and if it happens to be near to your location we would happily buy you a few beers 🍺

Hello there. Firstly, we can confirm the move here, is probably the best decision, my wife and I have made. We have only lived here for one year so far, but its been fantastic.

We are more than happy to share out experience of moving here etc, if you wish. As I say, we are newbies to the Canaries, but have leaned so much in the last year and our journey to eventually get our permanent residency.

For me, I guess the first question is your length of stay. What nationality of passport do you hold?

For me, I guess the first question is your length of stay. What nationality of passport do you hold?

My wife and I both hold British passports, We originate from Hertfordshire and London, Over the past few years we have spent the summer months in Bulgaria as the weather is reliably warm, however the climate in winter is as least as bad as England.

I have done a little research and understand that the south side of Gran Canary (Las Palmas) is particularly nice in the winter months. We are both youngish 55 and 60 my wife is not very mobile yet I enjoy fitness. Hence we are looking for a place where most things are within a short walk

Ideally we are looking for a small apartment with a view with amenities nearby, somewhere where we can enjoy staying in at night on a terrace or going to local bar or such like. Our aim is to spend a few months there this winter to get a feel for the place and look at potential locations to reside.

No problem. There will be others on here that can help you with moat things, I'm more the basics kind of guy 😊

Firstly, do you know about the 99 day rule for UK citizens now? This has been introduced after we left the EU and will most probably have an impact on the duration that you can stay

I do now 😊 😫 I could get a Irish as my parents were born there, however my wife cannot, so I suppose we only need an apartment for 3 months. Is that per visit, could we go twice for 99 days at a time or is it over a longer period?

Its 90 days that you can stay in or visit any EU country, in every 180 days. It is also.possible that you can both apply for a visa. If you search on this site, there was a guy who wrote a very very clear and excellent step by step guide. If you can't find it give me a shout. This visa would allow you to stay longer.

My wife applied for her Irish passport and that has now been over a year and it's still processing, so probably a visa or a 90 day visit is easiest for you at this time.

Thanks Alan, that is useful information, I think as it’s our first visit we will stay for 90 days, however that is subject to getting a rental for that period of time, if apartment rentals are longer then we may go down the visa route.

How did you find your first year?

Hi if you are thinking of getting a long term visa there is a lot envolved police certificates health certificates prove of income this all needs to be translated and legalised. You will also need private medical insurance this can run into a thousands for older people. If you have any previous medical conditions you may not be able to get insured and will not get a visa.

Good idea to do a lot of research before making any plans.

Hi my partner and I have just got our TIE cards and I’ve documented all the steps we had to take in the UK to get the non lucrative visa which you need to get if you are wanting to spend over 90 days here and not work. I’ve linked below for you as some of the information might be helpful for you…

PS we’re renting long term in the South in Campo International and love it !
